Evangelist Homage

** End of an Era **

PowerBuilder Homage - Dave Fish

Sadly, I have just learned that SAP have displaced one of the best PowerBuilder evangelist resources that I have personally known since PB creator David Litwack introduced me to the first evangelist at PowerSoft - Bill Rabkin. Apparently, this comes on the heels of SAP shuttering the complete Denver office along with many other once Sybase resources.

Dave Fish had over 29 years of experience in software development, and over 16 years of experience working for Sybase and SAP.  He began using PowerBuilder in 1993 and after joining Sybase held roles as a Professional Services consultant and as a PowerBuilder Evangelist. For the past four years he has been primarily focusing on mobile and web technology.

Dave also ran a PowerBuilder blog based website with a plethora of information on the PowerBuilder product (click here). Dave was also well published in the ISUG Technical Journal and the PowerBuilder Developers Journal. One of Dave's best articles that I liked was on the future of PowerBuilder (click here).

Dave is now an independent consultant, and is advising clients on mobile application and platform implementations. Dave also recently joined the ISUG-Tech Board of Directors as well.  Dave  significantly contributed to the continued prowess of the PowerBuilder product over the past decade and deserves - IMHO - accolades for his outstanding work! I think that Bill Rabkin (the founding father of PB Evangelism) would join me in saying that we (the PB community) appreciate your efforts on our behalf. Your exit from the PowerBuilder product scene is certainly going to be a loss for the entire PB ecosystem!

Dave ... we (the real PB developers) salute you!

PDBJ Magazine - End of Life

** End of an ERA **

I just wanted to formerly acknowledge the end of a great PowerBuilder Community resource ... the PowerBuilder Developers Journal magazine. In case you had not noticed, the last publication of the magazine was on March 6, 2013. Also, online digital editions had ceased to be updated since the end of 2009. As of late, you can not subscribe to the PBDJ magazine either - only various the Syscon news letters.

Just to make sure, I tried to contact my PBDJ editor Nancy Valentine and then to be even more pragmatic emailed the VP sales, subscriptions, etc contacts as well. All of these contacts are published on the Syscon website but the emails were returned as undeliverable. From there, I went to the Utilizer website and tried to contact them as Utilizer now controls Syscon. The final response I received from them is that the PBDJ Magazine was no longer but the PBDJ web portal was still running.

The PDBJ web portal does still accept articles written by Utilizer authors and verified RSS feeds like the one I have from this blog to PBDJ. This means that you can still publish to the PBDJ web portal using either of these mechanisms. Looking the PBDJ website though ( http://pbdj.sys-con.com ) most of the current articles are actually from my blog transferred over to PBDJ via my automatic RSS feed. So not much new content related to PB seems to be evident these days.

I would also really like to thank Bruce Armstrong for all his years of service to the PBDJ
Magazine as it's editor and also for writing many great PowerBuilder articles loaded with great technical information.

Unfortunately, with the demise of the PBDJ magazine, the whole PB community has lost another great resource in the PB Ecosystem!
